In the market of insurance of Portugal three types of agents operate: insurance companies, intermediary firms and pension funds.
Now in Portugal 586 insurance companies from which only 43 are the large companies with an average number of the staff occupied in the country over 9 thousand people work and are regulated by Insurance institute of Portugal (ISP). Remaining 509 firms represent branches of the foreign European companies operating according to a mode "free rendering services" (LPS).
However the Insurance institute of Portugal exercises supervision of all operators of the Portuguese market of Portugal and can pause activities of any them them.
In Portugal it is possible to receive all list of insurance services: insurance upon accidents, including on operation, insurance of a civil liability (two last are mandatory for workers in construction), insurance upon mutilations, diseases, death, fires and natural disasters, thefts, and also insurance of loads and financial assets (hedging). Upon real estate purchase on credit insurance is mandatory.
The state insurance envelops all range of social insurance (cm: Social insurance) from which most the modern is the European card of insurance upon an illness (Cartão Europeu de Seguro de Doença, CESD). The model of a CESD card is the general for all space of the European Union (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Greece, Spain, Finland, France, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania and Sweden), the European economic zone (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) and Switzerland.
